Dryden prevails over Fort Frances in shootout

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Braedyn Aubin had the lone goal in the shootout as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena Friday night.

An early power play helped Dryden grab a 1-0 lead as Jacen Bracko collected his 12th tally of the season 1:52 in.

Dylan Kooner tied it for the Lakers 2:12 into the second stanza with a man advantage effort of his own.

The GM Ice Dogs went back in front six minutes into the session compliments of Trey Palermo only to see Jaden Gustafson bring Fort Frances level a couple of shifts later.

The Lakers came out strong to begin the third as they got goals from Kooner and Jared Virtanen to go up by a pair with 16:02 to play.

Dryden however rallied thanks to Nic Noseworthy who tallied twice, including notching the equalizer with just 33 seconds left in regulation, to force overtime.

After the five minute OT session solved nothing, extra shots were required to decide the second point on the night.

In the shootout Aubin was the only one to connect while GM Ice Dogs’ netminder Ben Dennis stopped all three Fort Frances attempts he saw to complete the comeback win.

Aubin and Tristan Knott had two assists each for Dryden as did the Lakers’ Virtanen and Bernie Jack.

The GM Ice Dogs outshot Fort Frances 40-36 with Dennis picking up the win while Brandon Bodnar helped his team earn a point in defeat.
