English River to take on Fort Frances in Hockey Day in Canada in Kenora

KENORA, Ont. – It’s Hockey Day in Canada in front of a national television audience in Kenora and the Superior International Junior Hockey League will be front and centre among the festivities as the defending Bill Salonen Cup champion Fort Frances Lakers take on the English River Miners in a 6:30 p.m. CT start at the Kenora Recreation Centre.

Only six points separate the two sides in the SIJHL standings with the surging Miners having won four in a row to move past the suddenly slumping Lakers who are 0-5-0-1 in their past six outings.

Leading Fort Frances offensively is Jared Virtanen, who is also fourth in SIJHL scoring with 20 goals and 46 assists to his credit for 66 points.

Sidney Gladue is the top point producer for English River with 56, which ties him for sixth overall in the league as he’s collected 22 tallies and added 34 helpers along the way.

Miners’ netminder Michael Lenko has won his past four starts and has gone 8-1 in his past nine appearances.
