Fort Frances wins 1st of the season with triumph over Minnesota

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – It took longer than they undoubtedly anticipated, but the three-time defending Superior International Junior Hockey League champion Fort Frances Lakers picked up their first win of the season in five tries Saturday as they doubled up the Minnesota Iron Rangers 4-2 at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances got off to a good start picking up the night’s opening tally nearly five minutes in on a Jack Bernie effort.

Minnesota countered with the equalizer at 9:04 when Logan Froberg struck shorthanded to knot the affair at 1-1.

The Iron Rangers then took the lead before the first was complete as Isaiah Olschewske notched his first of the season at 13:02.

Action in the middle stanza saw the visitors supply the only marker in the session with Bernie setting up Oliver Alcock for his initial league goal.

Moving on to the third, and with overtime looming, Bernie buried the game-winner with 66 seconds to go in regulation to put the Lakers in front for good.

Fort Frances added one more just as time was set to expire as Jun Yi Zhong collected his initial SIJHL tally into an empty net to finish things off.

Making his first start for the Lakers, Billy Gorn stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced to register the victory.

Alex Burke was busy in the Minnesota net as he faced 47 attempts in defeat.
