Miners complete home-and-home sweep of Lakers

COCHENOUR, Ont. – The English River Miners rode the strength of a three-goal third period to pull out a 4-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter at Cochenour.

Fort Frances used special teams to register the lone tally of the opening frame as Brett Pickler connected on the power play at 12:23.

It stayed 1-0 Lakers until the late moments of the middle stanza when the Miners struck for the equalizer with seven seconds left in the session on a Trevor Pereverzoff man advantage marker.

Building on the momentum on that late tally, English River would get the game-winner from Dante Raposo six and a half minutes into the third.

Jamie Driedger and Kaden Hintz then added later efforts to round out the night’s scoring and finish off a weekend sweep after winning 2-1 at Fort Frances Friday.

Michael Di Lullo aided the Miners’ cause with a pair of assists.

English River outshot the Lakers 34-28 on the night with Michael Lenko picking up the victory and Jessie Heisz the loss.
