Fort Frances wins fourth straight
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Byron Katapaytuk recorded three points, including the game-winning goal, to help propel the Fort Frances Lakers to their fourth Superior International Junior Hockey victory in a row as they dumped the Thunder Bay North Stars 6-2 Wednesday evening at the Fort William Gardens.
The visitors grabbed a 2-0 lead after one period courtesy of tallies by Jordan Christianson and Henry Gutierrez.
Katapaytuk extended the Fort Frances cushion to three 5:47 into the middle frame as he notched one of three power play markers the Lakers fired on the night.
Quinn Rempel’s 18th of the season put Thunder Bay on the board a minute later only to see Bryan Broders answer back at 12:53 to make it 4-1.
Another by Rempel and a late effort by the Lakers’ Ryan Wildman rounded out second session scoring.
Jordan Larson’s SIJHL-leading 26th goal of the season added the game’s final marker in the third as the league’s top point producer ran his overall total to 51.
Tyler Ampe made 29 saves to register the victory in net while Marc Nother faced 31 shots in a losing cause.
Fort Frances improved to 23-8-4 with the win and Thunder Bay slipped to 16-11-5.
SIJHL action resumes Friday as Duluth hosts Iron Range at the Heritage Sports Center. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
