Larson leads Lakers past Flyers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers continued their winning ways Tuesday in the Superior International Junior Hockey League as they skated to their fifth straight victory, a 7-2 triumph over the Sioux Lookout Flyers, at Ice for Kids Arena.

The SIJHL’s leading point producer in Fort Frances rookie forward Jordan Larson scored a shorthanded goal early in the second period, which turned out to be the game-winner.

Special teams also saw the Lakers score three times via the power play giving them 10 in total during their winning streak as they improved their record to 24-8-4 on the campaign.

The two sides tallied twice apiece in the opening frame with Jon Carlson and Steve Terry scoring for the Fort while James McQuestion and Cody Fraser replied for the Flyers.

After Larson’s SIJHL-best 27th goal of the season put the home side on top in the middle stanza, Bryan Broders extended the cushion to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Fort Frances would put it away in the third tacking on three more efforts courtesy of Adam Wensley, Byron Katapaytuk and Davis Smith.

Larson, Wensley and Ryan Wildman all chipped in with two assists apiece as well in the win.

Tyler Ampe made 23 saves to register the victory for the Lakers who fired 34 shots on Sioux Lookout netminder Jayme Brattengeier, who was saddled with the loss.

In defeat the Flyers lost their fourth straight falling to 15-17-1 overall.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as Iron Range hosts Wisconsin in Hoyt Lakes, Minn. Game time is 7 p.m.
