Lakers Open Series with 3-2 Overtime Win Over Bombers

Fort Frances, ON – The Fort Frances Lakers were able to secure their 2nd straight win with a Friday Night overtime win over the visiting Sioux Lookout Bombers. 

It was a tale of 2 periods to start the night as Fort Frances dominated the 1st, and the 2nd went to Sioux Lookout. Just under 8 minutes into the contest Dylan Wedword of Fort Frances would start the scoring beating goaltender Jake Manners for an unassisted goal. Despite Sioux Lookout holding a shot edge in the period they couldn’t beat goaltender Brenden Stroble and would stay scoreless in the frame. Late in the period the Lakers would take advantage on the power play to take a 2-0 lead. Brady Krentz scored the goals assisted by Brady Wicklund and Darnell Kempf. 

As stated earlier the 2nd period belonged to the Bombers. Sioux Lookout outshot Fort Frances 16-5 in the period and would use the pressure to score 2 goals of their own. Connor Burke finally broke through with around 5 minutes remaining in the period. His goal was assisted by Calum McGill and Blake Burke. With just over a minute remaining the Bombers would score a power play goal of their own to even the score at 2. Ty Bahm beat Stroble with an assist going to Tegan Neumann. 

Fort Frances would once again find their footing in the 3rd period and even took back control of the game outshooting Sioux Lookout 18-11. Despite the 29 shots on goal both Manners and Stroble would ensure that no goals were scored, and the game headed to overtime. Penalties played a big part in the game as 71 minutes were assessed between the 2 teams. Lucas Trimarchi would get a holding penalty in overtime that would end up deciding things. With the 4 on 3 advantage Dylan Wedword would score his 2nd of the game with Brady Wicklund picking up the lone assist giving Fort Frances a 3-2 win. 

Brenden Stroble was sensational stopping 43 and picking up the win. Jake Manners made 40 saves in a losing effort. Wedword was 1st star of the game with 2 goals. Stroble secured 2nd star and Ty Bahm was 3rd star with 1 goal. The 2 teams will play again on Saturday.
