Lakers snap Miners’ 5-game win streak

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers picked up three assists apiece from Ian Tookenay and Nick Lucas while netminder Ismael Ralsten made 41 saves to help them earn a 6-1 victory over the English River Miners Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena.

Fort Frances gained the upper hand early with a trio of first period tallies off the sticks of Colton Bodnar and Christian Ward at even strength along with Adam Withers via the power play.

The Lakers added another in the middle stanza to go up 4-0 after 40 minutes on Julian Uhryniuk’s eighth goal of the season at 9:19.

After Ian Jarvis upped the lead to five early in the third, teammate Jaedin Ness tacked on another to extend the Fort Frances cushion.

English River would dash Ralsten’s bid for his first SIJHL shutout late as Ryan Patterson scored during a man advantage with 3:45 to go to round out the night’s scoring.

Ralsten 41 stops earned him the win while Westin Cardwell faced 40 shots in defeat for the Miners who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end in the defeat.
