Lumberjacks swamp Lakers

SPOONER, Wis. – Multiple point performances from nine different skaters allowed the Wisconsin Lumberjacks to take down the Fort Frances Lakers 10-1 Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter at the Spooner Civic Center.

After going scoreless through the first half of the opening period, Wisconsin came to life, getting goals from Ryan Wolf, Cameron Birkeland and Alex Bren, with his first in the SIJHL, as the hosts took a 3-0 lead to the intermission.

The Lumberjacks kept coming and blew it open in the middle session as they out scored Fort Frances 5-1 in the stanza to go up by seven after 40 minutes.

Braden LaPorte, Matt Turnbull, Joel Matthews and Tyler Shetland added to the onslaught before the Lakers’ Jaden Wake put the visitors on the board at 16:18.

However, Dalton Garcia answered that just 20 seconds later with his 19th of the campaign.

Wisconsin then finished off the romp in the third with Turnbull and Parker Brakebill completing the one-sided decision.

Lumberjacks’ starter Hunter Adams made 33 saves to record the win while Alex Bugeja and Dean Buchholz both saw time between the pipes for Fort Frances as they saw a combined 42 attempts fired their way in defeat.
