Szturm posts 1st shutout as Lakers blank Iron Rangers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Fort Frances Lakers netminder Tyler Szturm turned aside all 24 shots he faced Friday to post his first Superior International Junior Hockey League shutout, a 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers, at Ice for Kids Arena.

It took the Lakers just 27 seconds to pick up the only goal they would require on this night as Kirk Coppock collected his sixth of the campaign early in what proved to be the game-winner.

From there, it stayed that way until close to the seven-minute mark of the second stanza when Jaedin Ness made it 2-0.

He and Nick Lucas then helped set-up Brett Hahkala for his third at 11:45 as the home side went up by three after two periods of play.

Nate Drobnick’s initial SIJHL tally, early in the third, helped secure the decision with Szturm doing the rest in earning the win.

Fort Frances fired 49 attempts at Iron Rangers’ netminder Nick Corneliusen, who suffered the loss.
