3-goal 3rd sends Dryden past Fort Frances

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs scored three times in the third period to break open a tie game en route to a 4-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena.

Fort Frances did open the scoring near the seven-minute mark of the opening frame compliments of Ryan Gazich with Tyler Malpass and Jared Virtanen picking up assists, with the latter extending a consecutive game point streak to 14 in the process.

Dryden tied it late in the middle stanza when Braden Allkins collected his 26th tally of the season and scored for a fifth straight game.

Derek McPhail got the eventual game-winner for the GM Ice Dogs midway through the final frame.

The Lakers pulled starter Brandon Bodnar late in favour of an extra attacker, but Garrett Graham slipped one into an empty net with 40 seconds to go.

Dryden then sealed the victory in the final moments on a Kris Hamlin effort.

Allkins, McPhail and Hamlin combined for eight points in the win for the league-leading GM Ice Dogs.

Patrick Zubick made 27 saves to record the victory while Bodnar faced 34 shots in defeat.
