O’Neill’s shorthanded marker the difference in Miners’ 2-1 win over Lakers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – A Matt O’Neill shorthanded goal 16:17 into the second period proved to be the difference maker as the English River Miners edged the Fort Frances Lakers 2-1 Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ice for Kids Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, English River opened the scoring at 4:48 on a Jared Janke marker.

O’Neill then put the visitors up by two at 16:17 of the middle session as he struck for the eventual game-winner while his side was down a man.

Fort Frances did get one back with five minutes remaining in regulation on Dylan Kooner’s 26th, but that’s as close as the home side would get before time ran out.

Michael Lenko was solid making 35 saves to record the victory for English River while Brandon Bodnar stopped 25 of 27 in defeat for the Lakers.
