English River rallies to surprise Fort Frances

FORT FRANCES, Ont. –  The English River Miners stormed back from a two-goal third period defecit to surprise the host Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

The visiting Miners grabbed a 1-0 lead after one period of play thanks to an Alex Maticic power play marker at 7:10.

Fort Frances countered in the middle stanza getting a trio of man advantage efforts to to go up a pair after 40 minutes with Colton Spicer, Nick Minerva and Miles Nolan all scoring with the Lakers up a man.

In the third English River pulled to within one midway through the frame on an unassisted goal courtesy of Aaron Beauchamp.

Richard Dartnall then tied it at 12:11 before Miners’ captain Eric Champagne completed the comeback by firing home the game-winner with four minutes to play.

English River starter Greg Harney did the rest shutting the door the rest of the way finishing with 33 stops to record the victory.

Kyle Baril had two assists for the Miners as did Dylan Kooner for the Lakers.

Pierce Dushenko made 25 stops and suffered the loss in his Fort Frances debut.
