Fort Frances wins 5th straight in win over Thief River Falls

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – The Fort Frances Lakers scored once in each period to win their fifth Superior International Junior Hockey League game in a row Saturday after defeating the Thief River Falls Norskies 3-1 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Jared Virtanen’s fifth goal of the season 15:23 into the contest gave the visiting Lakers a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Fort Frances upped their lead in the middle session on a Dawson Waddell power play effort as his fourth of the campaign proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Michael Johnson’s 10th during a Norskies man advantage brought the home side to within one, but Lakers’ captain Dylan Kooner iced it with an insurance effort late to round out the scoring.

Fort Frances outshot Thief River Falls 49-41 on the night with newcomer Dakota Delbridge winning his SIJHL debut for the Lakers while Ryan Buttazzoni suffered the loss for the Norskies.
