Lakers edge GM Ice Dogs with shorthanded markers

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers struck for a pair of second period shorthanded goals just 30 seconds apart to help them pull out a 2-1 come from behind victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Tuesday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up held at the Couchiching First Nations Arena.

Dryden took a 1-0 lead after one period of play getting a power play goal from Jonathon Philley at 9:08.

In the middle frame, with the Lakers down a man, Lucas DeBenedet notched the equalizer at 14:13 beating Dryden netminder Tate Sproxton.

While still down a skater, Fort Frances came right back on the next shift and added the game-winning goal off the stick of defenceman Cody Antonini, who deposited his first SIJHL tally in dramatic fashion.

Lakers netminder Nathan Park shut the door the rest of the way making 20 stops to record the win.

Sproxton faced 39 shots in defeat for Dryden.

Action resumes on Saturday as the Lakers host the 3rd place Minnesota Iron Rangers at Ice for Kids Arena in a 7:30 pm start.
