Lakers return to win column

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – After having a season-high 13-game winning streak snapped last week, the Fort Frances Lakers got back to their victorious ways Tuesday evening as they skated to a convincing 6-2 triumph over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

The visiting Lakers came out firing in this one grabbing a 3-0 lead in a span of one minute and 18 seconds on tallies supplied by Dylan Kooner and a pair by Mason Meyer.

After Matt O’Dea put the Iron Rangers on the board with a power play marker at 13:11, Fort Frances answered that in the latter stages of the session as Gongshow Gear performer of the month for January Lucas DeBenedet buried his 15th of the season and 63rd carrer SIJHL effort at 18:27.

The Lakers extended their lead seven minutes into the middle session as Miles Nolan made it a 5-1 game.

Dylan Robertson extended the Fort Frances cushion to five with just over two minutes left in the second.

Evan Bennett got one back for Minnesota at 14:09 of the final frame,

Meyer also dished out two assists for a four-point night while Donovan Cousineau and Robbie Bonthron also chipped in with a pair of helpers apiece in the decision.

Nathan Park turned aside 17 attempts in picking up the win.

Kyle Carignan started for the Iron Rangers and suffered the loss allowing five against on 23 shots.

Devin Tappenden kicked out 21 of 22 in 32 minutes of relief.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday evening as the Lakers travel to Thunder Bay to take on the North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
