Record-setting crowd witnesses Norskies win over Lakers

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – Just a few games removed from setting a Superior International Junior Hockey League single-game attendance record, the Thief River Falls Norskies topped that by jamming 3,045 faithful fans into Ralph Engelstad Arena during a 4-1 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers Friday.

The large throng on hand were there to support both the Norskies as well as a fundraiser the organization was running to benefit in the fight against cancer, which included wearing special commemorative game jerseys in the contest.

After announcing his NCAA D-III commitment to SUNY-Canton earlier Friday, Thief River Falls forward Reily McIntosh continued his big day by opening the scoring seven and a half minutes into the contest.

Special teams helped Fort Frances tie it as Matt Tustin scored on the power play at 16:47 to record his 18th goal of the season.

The Norskies then got the eventual game-winner off the stick of Tommy Stang 11:46 into the middle stanza and then came right back with another 29 seconds later on a Dylan Dix effort.

Thief River Falls then iced it in the latter stages of the third as Dix deposited another to round out the night’s scoring.

Keaton Huot picked up an assist for the winners to extend a point streak to six in the process while Parker Simonson now has points in five straight thanks to a helper on Dix’s second marker.

The Lakers outshot the Norskies 41-37 with Ryan Buttazzoni posting the win and Jessie Heisz the loss.
