Steinbach tops Fort Frances in CJHL exhibition play

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Steinbach Pistons (MJHL) built up a three-goal lead then held on from there to earn a 3-2 victory over the Fort Frances Lakers (SIJHL) Friday in a Canadian Junior Hockey League exhibition contest at Ice for Kids Arena.

The visitors from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League opened the scoring in the latter stages of the opening period as Waylon Petkau connected at 17:47.

It stayed that way until well into the middle stanza when Luke Amsbaugh added an unassisted effort at 18:37.

Steinbach would tack on one more before the frame was out as Quinn Washlak beat Lakers’ netminder Pierce Dushenko with just 14 seconds remaining in the period.

Fort Frances would dash Pistons’ starter Roman Bengart’s shutout bid midway through the third as Isaiah Olshewske struck on the power play.

The Lakers pulled closer with 5:09 remaining in regulation when Kyle Folson brought the two-time defending SIJHL champions to within one.

Steinbach would hold on from there as they prevailed with the road win in inter-league play.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured the visitors 32-27 with Bengart picking up the win and Dushenko the loss.

The same two sides will meet again next Friday in Steinbach. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
