Trio of SIJHLers invited to Canada West selection camp

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Junior Hockey League, announced Friday the 60 players that will attend the Canada East selection camp in preparation for the 2014 World Junior A Challenge.

Among those invited to take part in the the camp are a trio of forwards from the Superior International Junior Hockey League in Carter Chorney of the Fort Frances Lakers as well as Nicholas Nigro and Brett Wolframe, who skate for their hometown Thunder Bay North Stars.

The 17-year-old Chorney, who hails from Rainy River, Ont., is in his rookie campaign in the SIJHL and has three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 20 games for the Lakers.

The 18-year-old Nigro has notched a team-leading 14 goals for the North Stars so far this season while setting up six others in 23 games. He is also tied for second in the league in game-winning markers with four.

Wolframe, 18, has scored four times and dished out 12 helpers in 18 outings for Thunder Bay so far this season.

The Canada West selection camp, scheduled for Dec. 7-9, will be held at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

The 60 players will be divided into three teams and play four intrasquad games (two 25-minute, running-time periods each) over two days.

Players named to the Canada West selection camp roster were selected from the CJHL’s five western Junior A leagues: the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and SIJHL.

The selection camp roster was chosen by Canada West head coach Trent Cassan (Yorkton, SJHL) along with assistant coaches Marc Berry (Dauphin, BCHL), Tim Fragle (Sherwood Park, AJHL) and Luke Pierce (Merritt, BCHL), and director of hockey operations Andrew Boutilier.

From the camp the roster will be chosen that will represent Canada West at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge, which goes Dec. 14-20 at the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley, Sask.

Canada West will play in Group B, joined by Denmark and Russia, while Canada East, Switzerland and the United States will comprise Group A.
