Debenedet scores 3 as Lakers sink Ice Dogs

DRYDEN, Ont. – Lucas Debenedet notched a hat trick while Wyatt Cota dished out three assists as the Fort Frances Lakers defeated the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 6-2 Friday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest held at Memorial Arena.

It was all Fort Frances in the opening period as they grabbed a 3-0 cushion after 20 minutes.

Debenedet began the scoring via the power play 2:26 into the match-up to send the Lakers on their way and his second of the stanza six minutes later put the visitors up by a pair.

Carter Chorney extended the lead as he notched his fourth of the campaign at 12:01 beating Dryden starter Tate Sproxton.

The GM Ice Dogs used the man advantage to get on the board 4:49 into the middle session as Anthony Filoso picked up his second goal since joining the club a month ago.

Fort Frances restored their cushion in the latter stages of the session thanks to an A.J. Kapcheck effort at 17:35.

The Lakers then put the game away in the third on markers from Dylan Robertson and Debenedet before Cole Golka added one late for the home side on the power play in the final minute to round out the scoring.

Devin Tappenden made 30 saves to record the win in net for Fort Frances while Sproxton made 21 stops in the loss.
