Fort Frances strikes early to top Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers jumped out to a five-goal first period lead and held on from there to defeat the Thunder Bay North Stars 5-2 Saturday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at the Fort William Gardens.

Mason Meyer opened the scoring for the Lakers at 7:40 of the opening frame before Wyatt Cota added to the lead midway through the session.

Fort Frances continued to light the lamp from there tacking on three more tallies before the period was complete getting markers from Matt Vela, Josh Gouin and Lucas Debenedet to put the visitors in control.

After a scoreless second, Thunder Bay got a pair of power play goals from Nicholas Nigro in the latter stages of the contest to round out the scoring.

Pierce Dushenko made 41 saves to record the victory for the Lakers.

North Stars starter Eric Mann suffered the loss giving up the five against on 23 shots while P.D. Mrelgoza turned aside all 15 attempts he faced in 40 minutes of relief.
