Fort Frances scores 4 on the power play to upset English River 5-3

The Fort Frances Lakers scored 4 times on the power play as they upset the English River Miners in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ear Falls Arena on Saturday night.

The Miners had the only goals of the first period as Eric Champagne and Joel Warkentin each scored at the 8:20 and 10:12 mark, respectively.

Lakers forward Mason Meyer evened the score by tallying twice, both on the power play, to even the match at 2, with the Lakers outshooting the Miners 23-11 in the period.

Miles Nolan opened the scoring in the third with a power play goal of his own at the 5:55 mark with help from Dylan Kooner and Matt Vela.  The score remained 3-2 until Miner’s forward Richard Dartnall tied it at 16:04.  The Lakers then took the lead for good as Nolan scored his second power play marker of the period just 1:17 later, unassisted.  Dylan Kooner netted his third goal of the season to put the final nail in the coffin at the 19:34 mark.  Final shots on goal were 39-25 in favour of Fort Frances.

The Lakers, who now get a 10 day break in SIHL play, next host the Dryden GM Ice Dogs on Tuesday, November 25 at the Ice For Kids Arena in Fort Frances.
