Lakers edge Ice Dogs to win 6th straight

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – A Mason Meyer power play goal with 39 seconds remaining in the second period proved to be the difference maker as the Fort Frances Lakers edged the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 2-1 Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ice for Kids Arena.

Neither side would score in the first period despite the Lakers pumping 21 pucks on Ice Dogs netminder Tate Sproxton.

Dryden opened the scoring 2:26 into the second stanza thanks to an Anthony Filoso effort.

Special teams allowed the Lakers to pull even at 5:43 as Donovan Cousineau connected during a man advantage opportunity.

Meyer then potted the difference maker in the late stages on the middle session in what turned out to be the final tally of the night.

Nathan Park made 23 saves for Fort Frances, who won for a sixth straight time.

Sproxton was solid in defeat for Dryden finishing the night with 36 stops overall.
