Lakers win 5th straight

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers used a well balanced attack, getting goals from seven different skaters, to defeat the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 7-4 Tuesday at Ice for Kids Arena to win their fifth Superior International Junior Hockey League game in a row.

Dryden notched the only marker in the opening 20 minutes courtesy of an Anthony Filoso effort at 16:45.

The Lakers stormed out in the second period scoring four times in the first 10 minutes of the stanza to go up 4-1 thanks to tallies by A.J. Kapcheck, Aaron Wesley-Chisel, Matt Vela and Donovan Cousineau.

The visiting GM Ice Dogs answered back with a pair of markers from the middle frame was complete to get back in it as Ryan Hron and Cole Golka both connected for Dryden on Fort Frances netminder Devin Tappenden.

In the third a Bowen Alcock power play goal increased the Lakers’ lead to 5-3 at 3:46.

After Golka’s second of the evening brought Dryden back to within one, Fort Frances put the game away with some insurance from Lucas Debenedet and Bryson Jasper to round out the scoring.

In all the Lakers saw 16 of their 18 skaters in the contest pick-up at least one point on the night.

Tappenden finished with 29 stops to register the victory for the home side.

Tate Sproxton started for Dryden, but gave way to Josh Martin after the second Fort Frances goal, who suffered the loss allowing five against on 28 shots. Sproxton saved 14 of 16 in just under 25 minutes of work.

The Lakers will look to extend their win streak in Wednesday as they travel to Thunder Bay to take on the North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
