THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The surging Fort Frances Lakers of the Superior International Junior Hockey League are among the hottest clubs in the entire 129-team Canadian Junior Hockey League in terms of winning consecutive games.
Victors in 10 straight SIJHL contests, Fort Frances currently boasts a share of the highest active winning streak in the CJHL with two other squads.
The Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL) and the Trenton Golden Hawks (OJHL) have also reached double digits with 10 successive triumphs each.
Tabbed 12th in the most recent CJHL Pointstreak Top 20 rankings, Fort Frances sits in top spot in the SIJHL standings with a solid 27-7-0-1 record.
Under head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan, the Lakers last tasted defeat back on Dec. 4, a 4-3 setback at the hands of the English River Miners.
Fort Frances has been equally as hot during the past two and a half months having gone 17-2-0-0 since Nov. 1 as the 2015 Dudley-Hewitt Cup hosts have been playing some of their best hockey of the season in that span.
The Lakers will look to extend their run to 11 Wednesday as they visit the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7 p.m. start at Hoyt Lakes Arena.
After Fort Frances, Spruce Grove and Trenton, the next highest active win streak in the CJHL is six and belongs to a trio of teams, including the 2015 RBC Cup host Portage Terriers (MJHL).
Joining the Terriers with a half dozen straight decisions are the Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) and Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL).
Meanwhile three more CJHL clubs in the Carleton Place Canadians (CCHL), Whitecourt Wolverines (AJHL) and Vernon Vipers (BCHL) have all come away victorious in their past five outings.
